Next Steps Chatham & Margate

The purpose of Next Steps Chatham was to introduce young people to the providers that could support them with their future employability journey to ensure they were engaged in either training, work or college once Talent Match South East (TMSE) finished.

Our aim was to engage young people in activities working with specialist advisors from several local training providers through team working activities as well as the opportunity for young people to interview the providers themselves. Try before you buy……

The idea behind the interactive approach of the event was to ensure potential new providers were less intimidating to young people, thus encouraging future engagement from the young people. We also needed to facilitate local training providers’ interaction with young people in a more informal way allowing them to support and guide in a very practical way throughout the day.

During the day young people were shown a short video on failure, its purpose and why it can be good to fail and more importantly how failure can be turned into success. We recognise that young people can and do fail and it the resilience in dealing with this failure that an impact on achieving one’s goals and dreams.

Each provider, in turn, introduced themselves explaining what they could do for young people, then worked with young people to build a bridge and then the young people interviewed the providers choosing to “hire or fire”.  A novel approach.

They then had a small chance to chat with providers but were encouraged to make sure they had business cards and contact details to have a further discussion.

Both Claire and Amy delivered motivating and rewarding sessions that allowed the young people attending to have options and choices as Talent Match comes to an end.

Outcomes

  • 15 young people attended and participated in activities throughout the sessions.
  • 10 young people were clear after the event what their next steps were going to be.
  • 8 of those young people said their next step was going to be with a provider that attended today.
